The diary of a newborn baby photographer is a complicated one! Nobody told your baby that they are expected to turn up for their portrait session. While some can’t wait to get here, some are fashionably late. This makes my diary a wonderfully fluid place!
When you first book your session, which I recommend after your 20-week scan, you will need to pay a booking fee to reserve your place in my diary. I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so that I can ensure I can fit everybody in whether your baby is born early or he/she is overdue. Once your baby arrives and you have settled back in at home, just give me a call, or send me an email or a txt message. We can then confirm the best date and time for your session.
Your portrait session will take place in my comfortable home studio. Newborn studios are not like traditional photography studios. They are designed to be warm and cozy. I want you and your baby to feel relaxed and comfortable so you are able to feed on demand and put your feet up with refreshments and a magazine or a movie (I even have some new parents who take a quick nap!)
3. DRESS CODE
For most of the session your baby will be in their birthday suit and a nappy so that I can capture your baby’s little features and details. Newborn clothes never fit correctly so we don’t get to see all those beautiful details that say ‘hey I’m brand new!’ or ‘look at my back rolls, tiny fingers and toes!’ However, I do use a number of specially handmade props, such as hats, pants, headbands, wraps and scarves etc. to create an original look.
4. TOILET TIME
Sometimes little accidents can happen and babies may poop and/or pee on props, blankets, perhaps even me or you! This is just part of the course, something I’m used to dealing with on a daily basis and something I allow for. All of my blankets and props are washed after each session using baby sensitive detergents. I also have plenty of other props to swap into and towels to handle this kind of situation. In addition, you might want to pop a change of clothes for yourself into your changing bag, just incase this happens.
Your newborn portrait session can take up to 3-4 hours and the reason for this is that we firstly have our pre-session chat but also your newborn will need feeding, cuddles and cleaning throughout the session which is baby led rather than photographer led!
I hope this article answers the many common questions but if you would like to book or discuss a session please Contact me.
Say ‘hello’ to Baby Orson! This ‘little’ guy came into the world weighing just over nine pounds and was such a treat to photograph with his gorgeous older sister Ava.

Thinking about booking your baby photography session? It’s never too early or too late to get in touch! Sessions take place within 5-14 days after baby’s birth and my calendar is filling up. So it is suggested that you book your photographer at the beginning of your second trimester to guarantee room on the calendar around your estimated due date.
