Newborns Nursery

Baby Alex | How to design a Gender-Neutral Nursery

Many of my clients choose to be surprised by the gender of their baby. The only issue they say they have is how to prepare the nursery before the baby’s arrival. So this is how to design a nursery that works
for either a boy or a girl. Start with a theme and colour palette, then choose furniture and
accessories to fill the space…

CHOOSE A THEME FOR THE NURSERY

Finding a theme for your nursery will make it feel cohesive and whole. Animals, sea life or the alphabet are all good choices for a gender-neutral nursery. Or, choose a colour, such as cream, gray or beige for the room. If you want to go bolder, try shades of yellow or green. Basic, sure. Boring? No way! Neutrals offer a soothing palette that provides endless possibilities for layering on contrast and texture.

FUNCTIONAL DETAILS

An all-neutral room needs a few interesting features to help define the space. For example, a piece of furniture in a richly finished wood, or a statement accessory that stands out. Small touches – such as wicker baskets for storage or a decorative pillow for the rocker – can help polish your nursery’s overall look too. Also, look for other accessories that add both style and function.

MAKE THE NURSERY UNIQUE

Once your baby is born, make the room one of a kind by adding a few personal touches. Decorative stenciling on the wall, a personalized photo gallery or a beautiful art display are all ways to give your nursery a special sense of style.
